I especially enjoyed that Gaiman was the one narrating the story. There is a passageway that leads to a different reality, one with her “other mother” and “other father.” When Coraline’s real parents become trapped in the other reality, she is forced to save them by mustering up all the courage and strength she has, but will it be enough to rescue everyone from the monsters of that world?Ĭoraline has won 13 different awards since its release and I can see why. Neil Gaiman has a way a weaving fantasy into reality that makes it delightfully creepy from the singing rats to the black button eyes of Coraline’s “other” parents. When Coraline moves into a new home, she realizes there is more to it than meets the eye. What I loved most about these stories is that they are very short, many were less than five minutes.
He does a fantastic job of speaking in a quiet voice and then slowly increases his volume to reiterate the urgency of the story. Irving’s narration brings the stories to life. While many of the stories are fantastical, there are quite a few that are so realistic you can picture yourself in the story. Many times I found myself shivering because I would get a cold chill down my spine.
They have just the right balance of creepy and scary. There is a reason that these stories are still popular, even after being published more than 30 years ago. To this day, Scary Stories remains one of ALA’s most banned or challenged books every year. Irving, who has had a lengthy voice acting career dating back to the 1950s. Scary Stories is a collection of folktales and urban legends that Schwartz gathered and didĮxtensive research on. The only reason that I finished listening to the story was the narrator, Nick Podehl, was incredible and actually made it worth finishing. Nothing remotely scary happens for about the first 2/3 of the book. It also really bothered me that the parents in this story were either completely clueless or completely overbearing. The only time they do anything resembling that of a pre-teen was when they snuck out of their houses in the middle of the night. I found Zach, Poppy, and Alice extremely childish for middle school students. This sends the three friends on a quest across state borders to help put the ghost to rest, but could Poppy be making the whole story up and will they be able to complete the quest without serious consequences?ĭoll Bones was a 2014 Newbery Honor book, but I had a hard time enjoying it. One night Poppy shows up saying that she is being haunted by the ghost of a dead girl whose bones were used to make a porcelain doll. He starts fighting with his friends and is constantly angry.
When Zach’s dad pops back into his life and throws away everything he has deemed too childish for a middle school boy, Zach’s life becomes a whirlwind. Zach, Alice, and Poppy have been playing a game with dolls and action figures for months now. Usually I am not a huge fan of renowned books, but in this case, time-tested is the way to go. With Halloween right around the corner, it’s the perfect time of year for a good fright! Recently, I listened to some spooky audiobooks to get ready for the season Doll Bones by Holly Black, Scary Stories by Alvin Schwartz, and Coraline by Neil Gaiman.
